AP: Afghan police chief shot dead outside home
Motorcycle-riding gunmen assassinated a police chief in front of his house after he led an anti-Taliban campaign in western Afghanistan, an official said Saturday. Police Chief Abdul Ghani was leaving his driveway in his car outside his home in Farah province when the two raced up and opened fire.

Reuters: Afghanistan fails to pass law banning violence against women
A law banning violence against women, considered a major step forward in women's rights in Afghanistan, failed to pass parliament. The law would have also created shelters for abused women, and limited the number of wives permitted to two.

Afghan Mines Minister Waheedullah Shahrani had led a delegation to Sydney, Australia to attend a mining development conference there next week. The Minister is expecting to hold a series of meeting with Australian officials on the sidelines of the conference to discuss Australia’s assistance in the development of Afghanistan’s mining industry and tapping into mineral and energy reserves.

AFP: Bombs kill 7, wound 50 in Afghan south
Two bombs exploded in the southern Afghan city of Kandahar on Friday evening, killing at least seven people and wounding more than 50, officials said. "One blast was a vehicle IED (improvised explosive device)," Javed Faisal, spokesman for the Kandahar provincial governor, told AFP. "Seven people are dead and more than 50 are wounded, most of them civilians.

LATimes: Afghan militants threaten more attacks after deadly bombing
A militant group said its attack Thursday on a NATO convoy in the Afghan capital marked a stepped-up campaign against the foreign presence in Afghanistan, and promised more such assaults. The suicide bombing killed six Americans, including four civilian contractors, and at least nine Afghan civilians, including two children, according to local and coalition officials.

AFP: Six NATO personnel, eight civilians killed in Kabul blast
A suicide car bomb attack in Kabul on Thursday killed two NATO soldiers and four NATO contractors travelling in a convoy, officials said, as well as eight Afghan bystanders who were earlier confirmed dead. "Two International Security Assistance Force service members and four ISAF contracted civilians died," the NATO-led ISAF mission said in a statement, declining to identify nationalities in line with coalition policy.

The dead bodies of three Georgian soldiers killed in Afghanistan who were given military honours were delivered to motherland. The bodies of Corporal Alexander Kvitsinadze, Vladimir Shanava and junior sergeant Zviad Davitadze killed in a suicide attack, were delivered to their homeland by a U.S. Air Force military aircraft.

NBCNews: Six Americans die in suicide attack in Afghan capital
Six Americans were killed when a suicide bomber targeted a convoy carrying foreign troops in Kabul on Thursday, according to a NATO source. The victims included two soldiers and four civilian contractors, the source added. Kabul police spokesman Hashmatullah Stanikzai said the attacker detonated a Toyota Corolla car. He added that six people had been killed and 35 others injured.
