A suicide bomber in southwestern Afghanistan killed 17 people Friday, and an Afghan lawmaker escaped a separate blast on the outskirts of Kabul but five of his bodyguards were killed, officials said.

AP: Suicide Motorcycle Bomber Kills 16 In Afghanistan
A suicide bomber riding a motorcycle killed 16 people, including two children and a policeman, and wounded at least 23 others Friday in a busy city square in western Afghanistan, officials said. Provincial Gov. Rohul Amin said the blast occurred about 55 yards from his compound in a crowded square in Farah.

DOD: Army Casualty Identified
Spc. Joseph M. Lewis, 26, of Terrell, Texas died on Nov. 17 in Kandahar, Afghanistan, of wounds suffered when enemy forces attacked his vehicle with an improvised explosive device. He was assigned to the 8th Squadron, 1st Cavalry Regiment, 5th Stryker Brigade Combat Team, 2nd Infantry Division, Fort Lewis, Wash.

Holly Greer Dietlin, the wife of 21-year-old Marine Cpl. Daniel Jacob Dietlin, told The Times-Tribune of Corbin that her husband underwent emergency surgery for severe head injuries after a vehicle accident Nov. 12 during night patrols. Holly Dietlin says the worst injuries include a fractured skull and multiple brain contusions.
