DoD: Army Casualty Identified
Staff Sgt. Israel P. Nuanes, 38, of Las Cruces, N.M., died May 12, in Kandahar province, Afghanistan, of wounds sustained during an enemy attack with an improvised explosive device. Nuanes was assigned to 741st Ordnance Company, Fort Bliss, Texas, part of the 84th Ordnance Battalion, 71st Ordnance Group.

Australia has announced it will contribute $100 million annually for three years beginning in 2015 to support Afghan National Security Forces after they take responsibility for their country's security.

The cost of the U.S.-led war effort in Afghanistan is about to rise by $365 million annually under an agreement that would reopen a key NATO supply route through Pakistan that's been closed for six months.

ledger-enquirer: Locally based National Guard unit helps break ground on school in Afghanistan
Members of the 648th Maneuver Enhancement Brigade recently teamed up with the Afghan National Army to break ground on a school renovation and to install a well. Completing the Pol-e Charki project will provide thousands of school children a place to learn and have drinkable water. The renovation is located in the nearby Camp Black Horse community of Kabul, Afghanistan.

A suicide attacker was killed before arriving to his target by police of Kandahar security directorate yesterday. Interior ministry press office said to BNA, a suicide attacker wanted to explode his explosive device in the bazaar of Zheri district of Kandahar province was identified by police forces, and came under gun fire and killed.

CNN: Poisoned water sickens Afghan boys at school
Nearly 400 boys at a school in Afghanistan's Khost province fell ill after drinking water from a well that may have been poisoned, a health official said Tuesday. Eighty of the 389 boys treated for illness Tuesday morning remained hospitalized, two of them in critical condition, said Amir Padshah Mangal, director of the provincial health department.

wbay: Appleton Soldier's Death in Afghanistan was Suicide
The death of an Appleton soldier in Afghanistan has been ruled a suicide, the Post Crescent reports. The body of Army Staff Sergeant Garrick Eppinger Jr. was found last September behind an ammunitions depot on the base where he worked. He had a gunshot wound to the head. According to the Post Crescent, the U.S. Army Criminal Investigation Command determined the gunshot wound was self-inflicted.

AP: Soldier killed in Afghanistan awarded Purple Heart
A Fort Carson soldier from Arizona who was killed in Afghanistan has been posthumously awarded a Purple Heart and is line for a Bronze Star. Army officials announced the decorations on Monday for 30-year-old 1st Lt. Alejo R. Thompson of Yuma, Ariz. Thompson was killed Friday when his unit was attacked with small-arms fire. He was assigned to the 4th Brigade Combat Team, part of the 4th Infantry Division at Fort Carson.

AFP: Seven killed in Afghan market blast
A remote-controlled bomb ripped through a bazaar in northwestern Afghanistan on Monday, killing seven civilians, including a provincial councillor, and injuring eight other people, police said. The blast in Ghormach district in the province of Faryab was the latest in a string of deadly bombings and suicide attacks since Taliban insurgents announced the start of their spring offensive earlier this month.

DoD: Navy Casualty Identified
Petty Officer Second Class Jorge Luis Velasquez, 35, of Houston, died as a result of a non-combat related incident in Manama, Bahrain. Velasquez was assigned to Commander, Task Force (CTF) 56 in Bahrain, which conducts maritime security operations and theater security cooperation efforts in the U.S. 5th Fleet area of responsibility.
